Chihuahua’s have a big personality for such a little dog. You can get the Chihuahua in a smooth coat, or long coat, they also come in a variety of different colours. Interesting fact; although the long hair and the short hair Chihuahua are the same breed, the KC looks at them as two totally different breeds. If you were to breed them together you would not be able to register them with the KC. Another interesting things that most people don’t know, is that there are two types of Chihuahua, there is the ‘apple head’ and the ‘deer head’. The apple head had relatively short legs and ears, their eye’s are a closer set, and they have rounded heads. The deer heads, have a more flat-top heads, with longer ears, and longer, more slender legs, with wider set eyes. Currently the more popular version of the breed is the apple head.
For this breed, how their temperaments turn out very much has a lot to do with the genetic temperament of the parent and grandparents. Chihuahua’s can very easily be provoked to attack, it is because of this they are not generally well suited in homes with small children. They don’t have the patients for children, and because they are so small they are very protective of themselves if they feel threatened at all.
This breed tends to be fiercely loyal to one person, they can become very protective of that person, and can be territorial towards other people and animals… I have a story about this;
My mom has a good friend that has 5 Chihuahua’s, she just absolutely loves the breed. These dogs are very protective over her. One night her and her husband got into a bit of an argument. The yelling got pretty heated. My moms friend was sitting on one couch and her husband on the other.. One of her Chihuahua’s ‘Jackson’ is this super cute long haired Chihuahua, a total mamas boy, and he thinks that he is the man of the house… So in the middle of the argument, Jackson jumped up onto the couch where her husband was sitting and started barking at him. As if to tell her husband off for the argument. Her husband pushed him away and put him on the floor. Jackson did not like this at all, so he jumped back up and started at the husband again. The husband got mad and yelled at the dog, Jackson then jumped off the couch and took a few steps back. A minute later he jumped back on the couch, but this time he didn’t bark at the husband, he simply lifted his leg up and peed all over his back… Of course my moms friends was in hysterics laughing, Jackson jumped off the couch and ran over to my moms friend and jumped onto her lap, very proud of himself, wanting some cuddles for his good deed.
Chihuahua’s are a special little dog. They love companionship of other Chihuahua’s, not so much other breeds. They also like to have their own little den, because of this you will often find them under the blankets, burrowed into a pile of laundry, or nestled into some pillows on the couch. If you are considering a Chihuahua as a family pet, it is important that a stable environment is available for the pup as they grow up. It is also recommended that you wait till your children are a bit older before you get one.
There are a few health concerns that need to be planned for. The Chihuahua will need vet assistance for any birthing, and for dental care. Because of the share of their jaw, there teeth are more fragile, and therefore there can be lots of dental issues if there isn’t a regular dental health routine. These types of issues can have a large cost attached to it, you may want to consider having insurance for your Chihuahua.
Chihuahua’s love to eat. It is important for owners of this breed not to over feed them, stay away from table scraps as this will cause major temperament issues, your Chihuahua will feel entitled and you will always have an issue at supper time.
As with any breed, it is always best to consult your vet for more medical advise for the breed and to really take the time with your breeder to get lots of information on the best ways to raise your Chihuahua. Because temperament is such a genetic concern, I would recommend choosing a breeder that has both parents on site so that you can meet them and know you are getting a good pup.
I know these little guys are full of energy and like to live a larger then life life. If you have any stories about your Chihuahua I would love to hear about them… Please leave a comment below to share your experiences..
